Special Olympics

Special Olympics offers a unique opportunity for clients, volunteers, staff and the community to come together—for fun, for support and a witness to the power of the human spirit. The Center has sponsored Special Olympics since 1972 – “The Piatt County Golden Eagles.” This program allows individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete athletically in various sporting events.

We offer the following programs:

  • Basketball

  • Bowling

We've had a number of athletes who have qualified for state Special Olympic tournaments.

Volunteers staff our programs. If you are interested in either coaching or volunteering for either of these programs, please call our office and ask to speak with our Special Olympics Coordinator. Community Donations help support Special Olympics and our largest fundraisers of the year include two, charitable basketball games. In 2024, our team played against local Piatt County First Responders and every year our team looks forward to taking on the faculty of Monticello School District. In addition, every year a Polar Plunge is held in Mahomet, which raises funds for Central Illinois Special Olympics in our service Region I.
