Special

Olympics

Special Olympics offers a unique opportunity for clients, volunteers, staff and the community to come together—for fun, for support and a witness to the power of the human spirit. The Center has sponsored Special Olympics since 1972 – “The Piatt County Golden Eagles.” This program allows individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete athletically in various sporting events.

We offer the following programs:

  • basketball

  • bowling

We've had a number of athletes who have qualified for state Special Olympic tournaments.

Volunteers staff our programs. If you are interested in either coaching or volunteering for either of these programs, please call our office and ask to speak with our Special Olympics Coordinator. Community Donations support Special Olympics.  Clients and staff participate in bowling and basketball and the annual Polar Plunge – “The Frozen Eagles.” Every year some of our staff and athletes participate in the annual Polar Plunge in Mahomet, which raises funds for Central Illinois Special Olympics. Also our annual community basketball game is our largest fundraiser for local programs. In 2023, our team played against the staff from Kirby Medical Center as well as the faculty of Monticello School District.
